We weld EPDM RESITRIX and PVC membranes with hot air, with no open flame. Underneath — an ALUTRIX vapour control layer and PIR insulation, if the roof needs them.
An insulated build-up in the Carlisle RESITRIX system — this is how we did the RESITRIX roofs in the photos below.

RESITRIX SK W or MB
Top covering of EPDM with a bitumen underside. SK W is fully bonded, MB is fixed with fasteners or ballast.
What we watch out for
Laps welded with hot air, upstands onto parapet walls and patches around penetrations.

Technologies
PVC membrane
PVC membrane sheets joined by hot-air welding into a single watertight covering.
When
On new and refurbished roofs, including those with many details — with no open flame.
Key points
Test welds and seam checks, a separation layer from old bitumen roofing and polystyrene, watertight upstands.
EPDM membrane
The RESITRIX system: SK W Full Bond (bonded) or MB (mechanically fixed), with an ALUTRIX 600 vapour control layer under the insulation.
When
On new and refurbished roofs, including green and accessible roofs, and over existing bitumen roofing.
Key points
Choosing the right version for the substrate, priming and watertight welding of the laps.
The membrane works as one system
Watertightness depends on the whole roof surface and its details. We match substrate preparation, the fixing method and the jointing technique to the specific membrane system.
Prepared substrate
We assess the stability of the surface and the compatibility of the layers with the chosen membrane.
Sheet joints
We weld the laps of PVC and EPDM RESITRIX membranes with hot air — with no open flame.
Edge zones
We plan the fixing and terminations at parapet walls and edges.
Drainage
We allow for falls, outlets and watertight flashings around drains.
We check
We assess the condition and preparation of the substrate
We check the falls and drainage
We plan watertight joints and terminations
We use compatible components from a single system
We avoid
We don’t trap moisture in unstable layers
We don’t skip thresholds, edges and drains
We don’t mix incompatible materials at random
We don’t treat the surface alone as the whole waterproofing

Questions
PVC or EPDM?+
PVC is lighter and works well on roofs with many details, but it must not lie directly on old bitumen roofing or polystyrene. RESITRIX (EPDM with a bitumen underside) bonds to prepared old bitumen roofing and ages more slowly. We weld both with hot air, with no open flame.
Can a PVC membrane be laid over old bitumen roofing?+
Yes, but not directly. PVC must not touch old bitumen roofing or EPS/XPS polystyrene — the plasticiser migrates and the membrane loses its flexibility. We lay a separation layer between them: geotextile or glass fleece.
Are roof outlets and parapet walls part of the job?+
Yes. We plan the membrane’s junctions with outlets, parapet walls and penetrations as parts of one watertight system.
Is the work covered by a guarantee?+
We give a 5-year guarantee on completed work. The scope and terms are set out in our quotation, according to the chosen system and the scope of the job.
