Tiled balcony. It is the layer under the adhesive that keeps water out, not the grout.

Frost-resistant tiles
Frost-resistant tiling with low water absorption.
What we watch out for
Grout and silicone are not waterproofing — it is the layer under the adhesive that keeps water out.

Technologies
Under-tile waterproofing
Flexible waterproofing under the tiles — 2K slurry or liquid membrane, matched to the substrate.
When
On balconies and terraces finished with tiles, also when replacing old tiling.
Key points
Sealed corners, threshold, outlet and drip profile, and frost-resistant adhesive under the whole tile.
EPDM membrane
RESITRIX membrane on the balcony or terrace slab, welded with hot air.
When
When the balcony or terrace is to stay without tiles, also in renovations and with a railing next to the facade.
Key points
Patches around the railing posts, upstands onto the wall and under the threshold, and a watertight edge.
It comes down to the threshold, corners and drain
We match the waterproofing to the structure of the balcony or terrace and the planned finish. Before we start, we check the substrate and how water is drained away.
Falls
We plan for drainage from the balcony or terrace surface.
Thresholds
We carefully join the waterproofing to the door and the building wall.
Edges
We keep the layers continuous at the drip edges and where the surface ends.
Movement joints and drains
We seal the spots that need separate detailing, as the system requires.
We check
We assess the condition and preparation of the substrate
We check the falls and drainage
We plan watertight joints and terminations
We use compatible components from a single system
We avoid
We don’t trap moisture in unstable layers
We don’t skip thresholds, edges and drains
We don’t mix incompatible materials at random
We don’t treat the surface alone as the whole waterproofing

Questions
What does the waterproofing work include?+
The substrate, the waterproofing layer and the junctions at thresholds, edges, movement joints and drains. We set out the details in our quotation.
Tiles or a membrane on the balcony?+
Under tiles we apply under-tile waterproofing — 2K slurry or liquid membrane. If the balcony is to stay without tiles, we lay hot-air-welded EPDM RESITRIX membrane, with patches around the railing posts. We choose the solution during the site visit.
When should the system be chosen?+
Before the layers and finish are laid. A site visit helps match the build-up to the structure, the falls and the intended surface.
Can new tiles be laid over the old ones without chipping them off?+
Sometimes, yes — if the old tiles are firmly bonded to the substrate (they don’t sound hollow when tapped) and we apply new waterproofing over them. With cracked tiles, a damp substrate or the wrong fall, we chip the tiling off down to the slab.
Why do balcony tiles come off after winter?+
Most often because of water that has got under the tiling — through missing or damaged waterproofing, a leaking threshold, corner or outlet, or voids under the tiles. As it freezes, it breaks up the adhesive and pushes the tiles off the substrate.
Is the work covered by a guarantee?+
We give a 5-year guarantee on completed work. The scope and terms are set out in our quotation, according to the chosen system and the scope of the job.
